Objectives: Students will be able to recognize the importance of American literary works; interpret and analyze these works, finding common themes and trends; write insightful, creative pieces that adhere to English language conventions; and provide logical, well-articulated comments during class discussion. Class activities will be aligned with the Indiana Academic Standards for English and Language Arts.
Literature covered: The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men, Night, various short stories and poems from the textbook, handouts, or internet sources.
Supplies: Independent reading book, notebook and a folder (three-ring binder with pockets and tabs recommended for class and required for final portfolio), highlighters, blue or black pen, and pencil. You will need notecards for your research paper.
Preparation time: You are expected to spend one to three hours on homework for every hour of class. Your homework will consist of independent reading, writing, research, grammar exercises, peer review, or projects. Homework and class work will be collected periodically for points. YOU SHOULD KEEP ALL YOUR WORK—you will need it for your final portfolio, exams and essays.
Evaluation: Grades will be broken down as follows:
Your final will consist of a comprehensive examination as well as a portfolio of your work accumulated over the semester. It is worth 20% of your total grade.
Class time: You are expected to arrive to class in a timely manner, prepared and focused. No food or drinks are allowed (except water). Taking detailed notes is a must for this class, since tests may be comprehensive.
