Objectives: The primary objective of this class is to prepare students for advanced 11th grade English. Students in English Honors will be expected to read and respond to a variety of world literature, demonstrating the following:
In addition, students will become familiar with the Greek and Latin root words that are so thoroughly embedded in the English language. Class activities will be aligned with the Indiana Academic Standards for English and Language Arts.
Texts: Beowulf (Seamus Heaney, trans.); A Midsummer Night's Dream (Shakespeare, Folgers Edition); The Alchemist (Paulo Coelho); Literature: World Masterpieces; A Pocket Style Manual(Diana Hacker); Everyday Words from Classic Origins (Perfection Learning)
Class organization: Taking comprehensive notes and staying well organized is a must for this class. To encourage this, students will be keeping a notebook for class that may be collected for a grade. For this notebook, students will need a three-ring binder with dividers and loose-leaf paper.
The agenda and homework is recorded on the board daily, and students are encouraged to write both down in their notebooks.
Homework: You are expected to spend one to three hours on homework for every hour of class. Homework (as well as class work) will be collected periodically for points. Late work is only accepted for excused absences (see Signature School guidelines for a definition of "excused"). The only exception to this is any assignment worth 50 or more points.
Evaluation: Grades will be determined by a point system. The final examination will be worth 20% of the final grade, and may contain several assignments. The following are examples only.
Essays, projects, major assignments 50pts.-200 pts.
Homework, classwork, quizzes 10-50 pts.
